Authority Part II
“And have made us kings
and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth” Rev.
5:10
Last week we looked at
some of the dynamics of authority and how it applies to God and the church.
We agreed that God is in
authority over all things. We call this “sovereign.”
Another word is
“dominion”.
We also looked briefly
at the churches authority. I used Titus 2:15; Paul writing instructions to
Titus tells him, “Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all
authority…”
Today we are going to
consider the authority that we have been given
in Christ.
But first, let’s
consider some of the dynamics of authority as we understand it.
1. Authority must be
given. Lk. 10:19 Jesus, speaking to the seventy,
says, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents, and scorpions, and over all the power
of the enemy, and nothing shall by any
means hurt you.”
2. Authority, like
respect, should, to some degree be earned.
In
Acts. 19:15 an evil spirit speaks and says, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” These
“Jewish exorcists” had no earned authority over this evil spirit.
3. Authority, like
leadership, must be recognized and agreed upon.
In Mat. 21:23, the chief
priests and elders ask Jesus, “By what authority are You doing these things?” Elsewhere, in Jn. 10:38 Jesus says, “though you do not
believe Me, believe the works.”

You got to have the goods!
We, as believers, have authority in Christ
Remember from last week we saw that authority is delegated;
it comes from someplace? More specifically, it comes from a higher authority.
Jesus
says, Mat. 28;18, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on
earth.” We already looked at Lk. 10:19, but also consider Jn. 14:12, “he
who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than
these he will do, because I go to My Father.”
Perhaps more
importantly, we have authority over sin.
Rom. 6:12, “Therefore do not let sin reign in your
mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.”
We are no longer slaves to sin. Jesus said, “No one can
serve two masters” Mat.
6:24
We have authority over
the devil. Jas. 4:7, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and
he will flee from you.” That’s
authority!
We have authority over
the earth; Ps. 8:6, “You have made him to have dominion over the works of
Your hands.” We understand that this dominion was bestowed to man in Gen.
1:26 but it was lost to satin at the fall. It was restored at the cross.
Our sphere of authority
now, under the present dispensation, is as an
ambassador living in a foreign country. This is important!
Phl. 3:20, “For our
citizenship is in heaven…”
The definition of ambassador is, “an accredited diplomat
sent by a country as its official representative
to a foreign country.”
We have the authority to
speak for our King, the Word He has given.
II Cor. 5:20, “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us...”
