Good morning,

Today’s photo of the Hudson River being diverted into what becomes Champlain Canal underneath a sunset sky featuring pink clouds reflected in the surface of the waters as the Hudson pours into itself comes to us from yours truly as I captured this scene on Saturday’s walk at Hudson Crossing Park in Schuylerville.  If you’ve never been there, this is quite a scene to behold as the workings of man and the creation of God come together to give the Lord glory as this manmade dividing line creates a waterfall where naturally there wouldn’t be one.  Unpictured in this photo there are also large stone monoliths in the waters of the Hudson towards the right  that once were the supports of a trolley bridge that is no longer there. I am including a couple of photos that attest to there existence on the blog today if you want to see what I’m talking about.  Without the bridge, these stone pillars seem to be the remnant of some long lost pagan society but instead of pointing to some pagan god, they actually bear witness of the futility of the works of man’s hands as time has erased what these pillars were placed for.

They look like something out of the Lord of the Rings, and they remind me of the Percy Byshe Shelley’s poem “Ozymandias” which says: (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46565/ozymandias)

“I met a traveller from an antique land,

Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;

And on the pedestal, these words appear:

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

As mighty as that trolley bridge must have seemed in its hay day, it now itself has faded away leaving behind the stone pillars that man travelled over.  Just like the mighty works of King Ozymandias, the trolly bridge that once crossed the Hudson River is gone and testifies to man’s inadequacy to create anything that will last forever.

Well it’s hump day and I thought today’s photo was a good visual representation of us pouring over the midweek summit of the last day of November of 2022.  The month of November couldn’t last either and tomorrow we enter into Christmas month, December, and as we do should recall the actual King of Kings, Jesus Christ, and not Ozymandias – sorry whoever you were.

I looked it up, and apparently Ozymandias was a Greek Name for the pharaoh Ramesses II who ruled Egypt from 1279-1213 B.C.. Although He ruled for 66 years, a long time for sure by human standards, he is just a footnote in human history and his power is gone.  Other than being remembered by Shelley’s poem, the historical record, and statue fragments and relics in museums, Ramesses and his kingdom didn’t last.

Remembering someone like this, a king who ruled for nearly seventy years, and who has been forgotten by most of us could cause us to despair.  I’m not a king and there are no statues of me, and it is doubtful that any of my writings will be remembered over three thousand years from now.  Time passes so quickly and where will we be in another 50 years?  While I could live to see 100 the insurance actuaries would bet against it.  If no one remembers my name or work, what will happen?  I don’t even know the names of my great grandparents! Will I just disappear forever as my bones turn to dust and all the things I touch with my hands also fades away?

Pretty depressing thoughts right?

So, why am I filled with joy? Because I know the Truth! Capital T, Truth – Jesus Christ!

Yeah, the telling of history and what we can figure out through our own observations can lead us to draw some very logical and very dismal projections for the future.  The History Channel’s show, The Universe – has an episode called the “Death of the Universe”, I recall that spelled out the scientific “facts” that the stars would some day burn out and the universe will fade to black, leaving everything and everyone dead.

But while this is very logical, the thing that people forget is that our existence doesn’t make any sense!  The universe exploded into being out of nothing and is still expanding. God is still creating, and He sent Jesus Christ to tell us that what seems natural and logical will be interrupted by the One who built this thing in the first place.   Revelation speaks of a new heaven and a new earth, AFTER Jesus returns and rules the earth for a thousand years!

So hold on to your hats, they say it ain’t over until it is over, and apparently life will never end as God is eternal and is over and above the created universe. And those who enter into His eternal kingdom, by putting their faith in Jesus Christ ALONE, will be with Him for eternity.  Not 66 years, forever! And ever!

I always point to Christ’s words in John 11, where He said

John 11:25-26 (NKJV)
25  … "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
26  And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

Well, do you?  Because you should, Christ proved He was God after saying this by raising Lazarus from the dead!  And that wasn’t enough, shortly thereafter, Christ Himself was raised from the dead!  Hey guys, that’s God over there! Jesus is the Son and God the Son.

Believe on Him and live, dig on His mighty works and tremble!  But you don’t have to be afraid! He calls us to believe in Him and live! If we are trembling it should be in response to the incredible joy that comes from knowing that we found the answer to everything.  We found eternal life, in Christ.

So as we leave what is forecasted to be the “November Rain” behind today, let’s rejoice because we know the Truth, we know the real King of Kings, and when we know that we can peace and joy all the days of our lives here on earth because we know there is more to this life than meets the eye and we have been blessed to know this.

So keep walking and talking with God. He doesn’t go away and when we put our faith in Christ, we don’t go away either. So you might as well get to know the One who will never leave us or forsake us and the One who gave us a hope for all time by learning about Him and telling Him the things He already knows about you.

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The NLT Bible Promise Book for Men”.

This morning’s meditation verse is:

Matthew 16:25 (NLT2)
25  If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.

Today’s verse reminds us that we cannot hold on to our lives and it is only in surrendering our lives to God that we will not lose the life we have.

Enough said?  No matter what we build in this life, time and history shows us that the material things we create, all our stuff, will most likely turn to dust.

Scripture tells us that our works don’t cut it, it is through faith alone, in Christ alone, that we are to be forgiven of our sins and given new eternal lives.

So what are you living for?  Some fat retirement? To leave some money for your kids, who will spend it?  While that is a nice thing to do, it’s impact will be finite. The money will be spent and no matter how cherished and cared for your family heirlooms are, eventually they will be given to someone who doesn’t know you and doesn’t care and will sell them or throw them in the trash.

Don’t put your faith in your stuff! That’s hanging on to your life! These things are idols and need to see as that.

I have a lot of things I like and would be sad to part with them but if God told me to get rid of them? See ya!  Including my life…..

Whoa… Don’t get it twisted I am not running after martyrdom anything like that but if we properly understand who we are in Christ and the implications of eternity in God’s kingdom, we will realize that we don’t really “own” anything. Everything has been given to us through God.

So start giving up your life for the Lord’s sake, and you won’t waste your life in silly pursuits that won’t last. You will save your life in the pursuits that give God glory and, not for nothing, could result in sweet eternal rewards, just sayin’…

But God is His own reward. He is the only thing that matters, and we will spend eternity with Him, so surrender to His will and discover what life is all about and watch as the fruit of the Spirit grow in your life.

The Messengers

(An Interpretation of Matthew 10)

The Decision

“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

¶ “Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.[35] Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it” (Matt. 10:26–39).

The messenger stays with the word and the word stays with the messenger now and forever. Jesus encourages his messengers three times with the call “be not afraid!” Whatever happens to them now in secret will not remain in secret, but will be revealed before God and the people. The most secret suffering inflicted on them has the promise to be revealed as a judgment over the persecutors and as glory for the messengers. Likewise, the messengers’ witness will not remain hidden, but become a public witness. The gospel should not become some sectarian affair. Instead, it is meant to be preached in public. Today it may still have to live off in a corner here and there. But in the last days this preaching will fill the whole globe either for salvation or for condemnation. The Revelation of John prophesies: “Then I saw another angel flying in midheaven, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation and tribe and language and people” (14:6). Therefore, “be not afraid!”

Human beings should not be feared. They cannot do much to the disciples of Jesus. Their power stops with the disciples’ physical death. The disciples are to overcome fear of death with fear of God. Disciples are in danger, not from human judgment, but from God’s judgment, not from the decay of their bodies, but from the eternal decay of their bodies and souls. Anyone who is still afraid of people is not afraid of God. Anyone who fears God is no longer afraid of people. Daily reminders of this statement are valuable for preachers of the gospel.

The power which is given to people for a short time on this earth is not without God’s knowledge and will. If we fall into human hands, if we suffer and die by human violence, we may be sure that everything comes from God. God, who lets no sparrow fall to the ground without the divine will and knowledge, will not permit anything to happen to God’s own people except what is good and useful for them and their cause. We are in God’s hands. Therefore, “be not afraid!”

Time is short. Eternity is long. It is the time of decision. Those who remain faithful to the word and the confession here will find that Jesus Christ will stand by them in the hour of judgment. He will know them and stand with them when the accuser demands they be judged. The whole world will be witnesses when Jesus names our name before his heavenly Father. Those who have held on to Jesus in this life will find that Jesus will hold on to them in eternity. But those who are ashamed of this Lord and his name, those who deny him, will find that Jesus is ashamed of them in eternity and will deny them.

This final separation has to commence here on earth. The peace of Jesus Christ is the cross. The cross is God’s sword on this earth. It creates division. The son against the father, the daughter against the mother, the household against its head, and all that for the sake of God’s kingdom and its peace—that is the work of Christ on earth! No wonder the world accuses him, who brought the love of God to the people, of hatred toward human beings! Who dares to speak about a father’s love and a mother’s love to a son or daughter in such a way, if not either the destroyer of all life or the creator of a new life? Who can claim the people’s love and sacrifice so exclusively, if not the enemy of humanity or the savior of humanity? Who will carry the sword into their houses, if not the devil or Christ, the Prince of Peace? God’s love for the people and human love for their own kind are utterly different. God’s love for the people brings the cross and discipleship, but these, in turn, mean life and resurrection. “Anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.” This affirmation is given by the one who has the power over death, the Son of God, who goes to the cross and to resurrection and takes those who are his with him.[1]

Bonhoeffer's Discipleship: Lesson 14 - The Church of Jesus Christ and Discipleship - The Body of Christ

Good Evening,

I had some extra time on my hands over the Thanksgiving Day weekend so I prepared the 14th powerpoint presentation a few days ago and had a little extra time tonight so I decided to produce and release the latest installment of Bonhoeffer's Discipleship.

So, I am happy to announce that I have completed and uploaded  Lesson 14 of “Bonhoeffer’s Discipleship” : an informal study of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Cost of Discipleship – with Lesson  14  –The Church of Jesus Christ and Discipleship: The Body of Christ.

“Saying Grace” with our Lives-  Purity 901

Purity 901 11/29/2022 Purity 901 Podcast

Purity 901 on YouTube:

Good morning,

Today’s photo of an outlet of the Hudson River in the shadows of the fading light of day comes to us from yours truly as my wife and I decided to enjoy the last bit of daylight this past Saturday in each other’s company on a walk at Hudson Crossing Park, in Schuylerville NY.   I had spent most of the day indoors working on power point presentations for the Bonhoeffer series I am producing while TammyLyn went to lunch with her mother and daughters but upon her return, with the day disappearing, I just had a sudden impulse to “do something!” and off we went and I’m glad we did. Not only did Isnag this spooky beautiful photo but I got to spend some simple “quality time” with my wife, where we didn’t necessarily say or do much but enjoyed the simple fact that we were together and that we loved one another.

Well, It’s Tuesday, and I guess recalling this past weekend’s little excursion is my attempt to encourage you to be cognizant of the time you have and to utilize it, where you can, to enjoy your life and let the people you love know you appreciate them.  At that late afternoon hour, we could have just surrendered to the regular routine of getting ready for dinner and watched the daylight wane from the inside of our country side home but instead we enjoyed the last brightness of the day on the drive to Hudson Crossing and at a time some may have determined to be “too late” to go on a walk, we were on our way out, having seen every bit of daylight in a place where we could enjoy God’s creation in each other’s company rather than indoors.

I think about this “stuff” often, the fact that although God gives us His word to guide us, He also gives us a lot of “free time” to decide what to do with our lives. We can work. We can study. We can sleep. We can stay indoors. We can go out. But the thing is, even though I do enjoy my times walking and talking with God outside, I have pondered the fact that much of our human existence would seem to be “a wash” in terms of the impact that our decisions make on our lives.  In the grand scheme, one single day in our lives may not mean that much, and in hindsight, we can analyze similar days and see no difference between a day spent indoors or a day spent outside.

There is little in and of itself of certain experiences that make them “better than others” and God’s word is rather silent on what we should do with the particulars of each and every day of our lives. We can do anything and one thing isn’t necessarily better than another!

However, the reason I write this blog and do this podcast is that I have discovered, and continue to learn, that a life spent, regardless of our particular activities, in the “presence” of the Lord and in the context of who we are in Christ is a life that is spent in peace, love, and joy.

Anybody looking on the outside at TammyLyn and I during our walk in the park, would have counted two in our party, but they would have been missing Someone.  Yes, we were alone but the love and gratitude that we expressed towards each other at various times in our little stroll was replete with mentions of the God that we credit with bringing us together and with thanks given in His direction.

As easy as this is to do when you are surrounded by the glory of God’s natural creation outside, it is also something you can do inside too.

I have to admit that before TammyLyn, I never was much of a “saying grace” Christian but early on in our relationship I saw that it was a regular practice for her. Or at least I guess it was because since I have entered her life, the “saying grace” thing seems to have fallen to me!

But social awkwardness aside, its easy to do. What could be more appropriate than thanking the Lord for providing the food that you are going to eat, and in my case, for the beautiful woman who lovingly prepared it?

So, that’s just one way we can keep the Lord in the midst of our presence while indoors, but the truth is that I am continually “saying grace” over my life as I literally thank God moment to moment for all the things I encounter.  When I say “keep walking and talking with God”, I really mean it, like literally.

Yes, like “Wow that dude’s crazy”, walking and talking with God.  While I can’t say that all of my life is without problems, a lot of which I create myself, walking through life and recognizing the beauty of just being with the people we love, just being where you are, and just being alive is something God never tires of hearing about, or at least He hasn’t complained to me about my constant awe and thanks!

So if you are not doing this already, start living with and start loving the Lord. There is much to be thankful for and unlike some of our human companions, He never tires of hearing us “point out the obvious” or in telling Him about how we feel.

The constructs of society and just the “business as usual” way we do things can make us “less free” as we are absorbed into the mundanity of the humdrum, when the truth is that our lives are a miracle and a mystery and there’s nothing humdrum about them. But you have to open your eyes to see it and open your heart to feel it,  the One that you never have to be ashamed to share your “silly thoughts” with is the Lord.

So it’s another boring Tuesday again… or it is another day of living the adventure of our lives?, where we can do almost anything we want, with consequences of course, but even in the tight confines of doing what we “need to do” we can still find wonder and joy.

So look around and appreciate where you are, or go “DO SOMETHING” and appreciate that, but no matter what you decided to do with this last Tuesday of November in the year of our Lord 2022, turn aside and thank the Lord for what you encounter.

The pathway to peace isn’t a destination, its determined by the way you walk and the company you keep.

--------------------------------------------------------

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The NLT Bible Promise Book for Men”.

This morning’s meditation verse is:

Philippians 4:8 (NLT2)
8  And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Today’s verse highlights the importance of what we think about in our Christian walk.  I can’t recall exactly what I was thinking about on my Saturday afternoon walk with my wife TammyLyn, but I can tell you this: I wasn’t thinking about my problems, my work, or the “bad state of the world” and because I didn’t think on those things I recall the walk quite fondly.

But let’s not get that twisted, okay? We are not to walk through life in denial.  The world is out there and the failure to recognize our surroundings and our responsibilities will eventual cause us to suffer.  We are to be stewards of what God has given us and care for it.

However, at the same time we can manage that quite well without dwelling on the things that will lead us into sin or that will disturb our peace.

As much as we are “world citizens” and care  for our fellow man, in truth there is not much we can do about the events that are distant from us, or even near to us, unless we choose to get involved with them.

So, there you go. If you choose to think on things that disturb you, I would like to hold you accountable by suggesting that your thoughts should not just be something that will steal your peace, but that you would seek to solve the situations that disturb you.  Oh yeah, I’m no political pundit but if the way of the world bothers you so much, I’m going to call you out and tell you to “do something about it”.

I have had friends that would spend hours telling me about political situations or conspiracy theories and I would listen for a while but then would always ask: “So what should I DO?”

Unbelievably, or perhaps very believably, other than getting obsessed or angry like them, they didn’t have many helpful suggestions or a course of action that would correct the situations other to hand the problems over to someone else.

Thinking about problems will steal your peace but figuring out solutions and ENACTING THEM is another matter.

Solving problems is what we are supposed to do on earth as Christians.  But the biggest problem is sin and the fact that we are hopeless without Jesus.

So that’s my suggestion every time: put your faith in Christ and apply God’s word to the way you live your life.

And listen today’s verse’s advice: think on “what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

The world is fading away, and our lives on it every moment.  There is only so much we can do, but we should do it, if we can.  But the way to peace, no matter what we accomplish, is the way of the Lord and to think on those things that He would have us think about.

The Messengers

(An Interpretation of Matthew 10)

The Suffering of the Messengers

“See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware [the people], for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

¶ “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!” (Matt. 10:16–25).

Lack of success and enmity cannot dissuade the messengers from the fact that they are sent by Jesus. As a mighty strength and consolation, Jesus repeats: “Behold, I send you!” It is not their own way or their own enterprise; they are sent. In this the Lord promises that he will remain with his messengers when they will be like sheep among the wolves, defenseless, powerless, fearful, and in great danger. Nothing will happen to them that Jesus does not know. “Therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” How often the servants of Jesus have misused this statement! How difficult it is even for the willing messenger to understand this rightly and remain obedient! Who can always distinguish between spiritual wisdom and worldly cleverness? How tempting it is, therefore, to renounce all “wisdom” and only be as simple as doves, which, one-sided, is disobedience. Who tells us when we avoid suffering out of fear and when we seek it out of recklessness? Who shows us the hidden boundaries drawn here? It is the same disobedience, whether we use the commandment to be wise against innocence, or the other way around, whether we use innocence against wisdom. Because no human heart can fully know itself, and because Jesus never called his disciples to uncertainty, but always to greatest certainty, this warning by Jesus can only call the disciples back to the word. Wherever the word is, that is where the disciples are to be. That is their true wisdom and their true innocence. If the word must retreat, because it is obviously being rejected, then the disciples should retreat with the word. If the word remains in an open struggle, then the disciples should remain. They will have to act wisely and simply at the same time. But the disciples should never set out on a road out of “wisdom,” when that road cannot be approved by the word of Jesus. They should never justify with “spiritual wisdom” a way which does not correspond to the word of Jesus. Only the truth of the word will teach them to recognize what is wise. But it can never be “wise” to break off the smallest piece of the truth, for the sake of some human prospect or hope. Our own evaluation of our situation cannot make us see what is wise; only the truth of the word of God can do that. The only thing that is always wise is staying with the truth of God. Here alone is the place where of God’s faithfulness and aid are promised. At all times it will prove to be the “wisest” for the disciples at this time and in the coming time to simply stand by the word of God.

The word will give the messengers true knowledge of the people. “Beware the people.” The disciples should not show fear of the people, nor evil mistrust, least of all hatred toward human beings, nor should they show thoughtless trustfulness or faith in the good in all people. Instead, they should show true knowledge of the relationship of the word to the people and the people to the word. If they understand this soberly, then they will not be scared by Jesus’ announcement that their path among the people will be a path of suffering. Rather, they will be able to endure it. A wonderful strength resides in the disciples’ suffering. Criminals suffer their punishment in hiddenness. But the disciples’ path of suffering will lead them before princes and kings, “for my sake, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles.” The good news will be propagated by suffering. That is the plan of God and the will of Jesus; and that is why in the hour of accountability before courts and thrones the disciples will be given the power to give a good confession, to offer a fearless witness. The Holy Spirit itself will be with them. It will make them invincible. It will give them “a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict” (Luke 21:15). Because the disciples hold fast to the word in their suffering, the word will remain with them. Self-sought martyrdom would not have this promise. But the promise is absolutely certain for those who suffer with the word.

Hate toward the word of Jesus’ messengers will remain until the end of time. Hate will pronounce the disciples guilty of all the divisions which will come over cities and houses. Jesus and his disciples will be condemned by everyone as destroyers of the family, as forces leading the people astray, as crazy enthusiasts and troublemakers. Then the temptation to fall away will be very near to the disciples. But the end is also near. Until its coming they are to remain faithful, to endure, to stand fast. Only those who stand fast with Jesus and his word to the end will be blessed. But when the end comes, when the enmity toward Jesus and his disciples is revealed for all the world to see, then and only then should the disciples flee from one city to another, in order to proclaim the word where it will still be heard. Even in this flight, they are not separated from the word, but stand fast with it.

The promise of Jesus that he will come again soon has been kept for us by the church-community in the belief that it is true. Its fulfillment is a mystery, and it is not a good thing to look for human ways to evade the issue. But what is clear, and the only thing important for us today, is the fact that the return of Jesus will come quickly. His coming is more certain than our being able to complete our work in his service. It is more certain than our death. Jesus’ messengers can receive no greater consolation in all this than the certainty that in their suffering they will be like their Lord. Whatever happens to the master will happen to the disciple; whatever happens to the lord will also happen to the servant. If Jesus is called a devil, then that will happen even more to the servants of his house. So Jesus will be with them and they will be like Christ in everything.[1]

“An Expression of God that will Radiate His Light”- Purity 900

Purity 900 on YouTube:

Good morning,

Today’s photo of an epic November sunrise comes to us from a friend who captured this early morning scene yesterday near their home in the Clifton Park area of upstate New York.  Our friend wasn’t the only one to witness this stark evidence of God’s glory as many in the capital district shared similar photos with the local news outlets, who shared them on social media. I suppose I could have “borrowed” one of these other photos, but I prefer to share my friend’s even though it has been quite some time since I have seen them or have spoken to them.  This particular friend had some life experiences that are similar to mine and even though I honestly don’t know how they are doing currently, I’m rooting for them, and because of our crossed paths, I suppose I always will be. Just knowing that they witnessed this scene gives me joy.

Well it is the Monday after Thanksgiving, and although I am filled with joy for my friend, my heart is somewhat heavy this morning as my wife, her children, and many others will be mourning the loss of a friend who was more like family later this afternoon.

Our shared experiences and history can really form strong bonds in a short period of time, but those bonds can be especially strong when we walk through life with someone for an extended period of time, where the time of our relationships together can witness the aging of our children to adulthood.

I only met Linda Lee Henle on a couple of occasions for brief periods and she seemed like a friendly lady but I know that she was much more than that to my wife, as she was introduced and described as a “grandmother” of sorts to my wife’s kids.  I only met her a few times so I won’t be taking off from work to attend the memorial service this afternoon, but I did lift “Ms. Linda’s” grieving “family” up in prayer this morning because I know she was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.

Out of curiosity, I checked out her obituary this morning to learn a little  more about this “nice lady” who meant so much to so many to see what it would say and to see if there  was anything I could learn from her life.   It says:

Linda was an extraordinary mother, wife, and caregiver. She dedicated herself to helping those in the world who needed it most through her work with special education, elderly care, the Girl Scouts, Sunday school, and other various youth organizations. She travelled just about every road in this country, welcomed foreign exchange students into her home, and loved bringing her family together around the dinner table. One of her many creative talents was playing the accordion. Linda was intelligent, had a strong moral compass, and her compassion extended not just to humans but to all creatures of the Earth. Linda exemplified selfless and unconditional love. She was an expression of God that will radiate his light even in the darkest shadows.”

She passed away on Tuesday, somewhat suddenly. I had seen her at my stepdaughter’s birthday party back in September and now she’s gone, but obviously not forgotten, and because she knew the Lord we know she lives today although we can’t see her, yet.

While serving the community and our fellow man is admirable, I think the best thing anyone can say about us is what was said about Linda: that she “was an expression of God that will radiate his light even in the darkest shadows.” What a testimony!

As much as we try to make our way in the world and leave a legacy behind, Linda’s life shows us that the love we have to give is the most valuable thing we possess and that our life is best spent giving it away.

So pray for the family and friends of our departed sister, and let’s thank the Lord for being able to know His love and to know people like, “Ms. Linda” Henle whose life was a living expression of His light.

So as we get back to business as usual this Monday morning, let’s remember our friends and family that show us the love of the Lord and let’s remember to not be so busy and to try to reflect the light of the Lord in our lives, as we keep on walking and talking with God.

Today’s Bible verses comes to us from “The NLT Bible Promise Book for Men”.

This morning’s meditation verse are:

Romans 8:5-6 (NLT2)
5  Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.
6  So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

Today’s verses encourage us to be controlled by the Holy Spirit and to guide us to repent of our sinful nature and to think upon things that please the Spirit and that will give us a life of peace.

Hey what’s wrong, according to the word of God, is wrong, and a life lived following the “moral compass” of the Holy Spirit is a life that may not always be easy but will have an enduring peace.

Like I have admitted, I didn’t know “Ms. Linda” Henle very well but she was known for being an expression of God’s light, not just His love.  I wouldn’t really know this to be true myself, except for my wife’s testimony of her words of encouragement to TammyLyn’s daughters.

As we talked about her passing this past weekend, TammyLyn told me about how Ms. Linda recently told her daughters “to do what was right” with the way they lived their lives, stating that “Ms. Linda” would remind them that they are “Christian girls” after all.

In this age of moral relativism and situational ethics, I just love that testimony of Ms. Linda’s moral compass, that although she expressed God’s love to all within her “oikos” ( her surroundings – or dwelling place – her household, who she made everyone feel welcomed in) she also reflected the light of God in the darkness, that meant more than just hope.

Her encouragements to live as “Christian girls” was literally the advice that is most desperately needed in these dark times of loose sexuality and rampant substance abuse that plagues our society. Ms. Linda’s words were telling TammyLyn’s daughters the pathway they should follow that would lead to peace.

While we all have free will….

and believe me as someone who abused it for most of his life before deciding to follow Christ, I know the depths of depravity that “freedom” can lead to, personally,

the word of God and faithful saints, like Ms. Linda, tell us, quite clearly, the way we should go.

So walk in the Spirit, repent of your sinful nature, and think on, and do, the things that pleases the Spirit of God and leads to a life of peace.

The Messengers

(An Interpretation of Matthew 10)

The Work

“These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel’ ” (Matt. 10:5–6).

As Jesus’ helpers, the effectiveness of the disciples is grounded in the clear commandment of their Lord. It is not left up to them to decide how to undertake and understand their work. The work of Christ they are to do forces the messengers completely into the will of Jesus. Blessed are they who have such an authority given them for their office [Amt] and who are freed from their own discretion and calculations!

The very first word limits the messengers’ work in a way which must have seemed strange and difficult to them. They were not allowed to choose where they were to work. What was decisive was not where their hearts led them, but where they were sent. This makes quite clear that they are not to do their own work, but God’s work. Would it not have seemed obvious to go to the Gentiles and the Samaritans, because they had special need of the good news? That may be, but they were given no such commission. God’s works cannot be done without God’s commission; otherwise, they would be done without God’s promise. But does this promise and commission to preach the gospel not apply everywhere? Both apply only where God has given the commission. But is it not precisely the love of Christ which urges us to proclaim the gospel without limits? The love of Christ differs from the enthusiasm and zeal of our own hearts in that it holds to the commission. We do not bring the salvation of the gospel to our sisters and brothers who belong to our own people or to the Gentiles in foreign countries, for the sake of our own love for them, no matter how great that love is. Instead, we do it at the Lord’s command, which he gave in the Great Commission.[18] Only the commission shows us the place on which God’s promise rests. If Christ does not want me to preach the gospel here or there, then I should let everything go and obey Christ’s will and word. So the apostles are bound to the word and to the commission. The apostles should be found only where the word of Christ, where the commission may be found. “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

We, who came from the Gentiles, were once excluded from the good news. First, Israel had to hear and reject the message of Christ, so that it could be brought to the Gentiles, and so that a congregation of Gentile Christians could be built according to the commission of Jesus Christ. It is only after he is resurrected that Jesus gives the Great Commission. In this way the limitation of the commission, which the disciples surely could not understand, became an instrument of grace for the Gentiles, who received the good news of the crucified and risen one. That is God’s way and wisdom. For us, only the commission remains.

“As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment” (Matt. 10:7–8). The message and the effectiveness of the messengers are exactly the same as Jesus Christ’s own message and work. They participate in his power. Jesus commands that they proclaim the coming of the kingdom of heaven, and he commands the signs which authenticate the message. Jesus commands them to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons! Proclamation becomes an event, and the event gives witness to the proclamation. The kingdom of God, Jesus Christ, forgiveness of sins, justification of the sinner by faith: all this is nothing other than the destruction of demonic power, healing, and raising the dead. As the word of the almighty God, it is deed, event, miracle. The one Jesus Christ goes out through the country in his twelve messengers and does his work. The royal grace with which the disciples are equipped is the creative and redemptive word of God.

“Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food” (Matt. 10:9–10). Because the command and the power of the messengers are given by the word of Jesus alone, nothing should be seen on Jesus’ messengers which would make their royal mission unclear or incredible. In royal poverty the messengers are to witness to the riches of their Lord. What they have received from Jesus is no property of their own, with which they could bargain for other goods. “You received without payment!” Being a messenger of Jesus does not grant any personal rights; it does not entitle one to respect or power. That does not change even when the free messenger of Jesus has turned into an official pastor. The rights of a man with a university education and the privileges of social standing are no longer valid for anyone who has become a messenger of Jesus. “You received without payment!” Or was there something else which attracted us besides the call of Jesus which took us, who did not deserve it, into his service? “Give without payment.” Let it become clear that with all the riches you have to give, you covet nothing for yourselves: no property, but also no respect or acknowledgment, not even gratitude! From where would you get such expectations? Any honors we claim for ourselves are stolen from him to whom they rightfully belong, the Lord who sent us out. The freedom of Jesus’ messengers should show in their poverty. We cannot draw conclusions from the fact that Mark and Luke vary somewhat from Matthew in their lists of what the disciples are allowed or forbidden to take along. Jesus prescribes poverty to those who set out in the authority of his word. We should not overlook the fact that this is a commandment of Jesus. The disciples’ personal property is prescribed down to the smallest details. They should not be conspicuous as beggars with torn clothing and become burdensome parasites to other people. But they should go around in the working clothes of poverty. They should carry with them no more than a hiker in the country who is certain that at night he will find a house with friends who will shelter him and give him the food he needs. They are not to invest that kind of trust in people, but in him who sent them, and in their heavenly Father, who will take care of them. In doing so they will give credibility to the message they proclaim, namely, the coming reign of God on earth. In the same freedom in which they do their ministry they should accept lodging and food, not as alms for beggars, but as the food laborers deserve. Jesus calls his messengers “laborers.” Sloth, to be sure, does not deserve food.[24] But what is work, if not this struggle with the powers of Satan, this struggle for the hearts of the people, this renunciation of their own reputation, possessions, and joys of the world, for the sake of serving the poor, the mistreated, and the miserable? God was burdened and wearied by work for human beings (Isa. 43:24). The soul of Jesus worked until death on the cross for our salvation (Isa. 53:11). The messengers participate in this work: in proclamation, in overcoming Satan, and in intercessory prayer. Anyone who does not acknowledge this work has not yet understood what the service of a faithful messenger of Jesus is like. They may receive their daily wages without shame, and without shame they should remain poor for the sake of their ministry.

“Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town” (Matt. 10:11–15). Work in the faith-community will start with the houses “which are worthy” of lodging Jesus’ messengers. God still has communities praying and waiting everywhere. The disciples will be received there in the name of their Lord humbly and willingly. There their work will be assisted by prayer; there a small group exists, which stands in for the whole community. To prevent conflict in the community and false aspirations or concessions in the disciples, Jesus commands the apostles to remain in the same house as long as they are in the same town. The moment the messengers enter a house and a city, they get down to business. Time is valuable and short. Many are still waiting for the good news. Even the first word of greeting they speak, as their Lord does, “Peace be with this house!” (Luke 10:5), is not an empty phrase. Instead, it immediately brings the power of God’s peace to those “who are worthy.” The messengers’ proclamation is brief and clear. They proclaim the dawning of the reign of God; they call for repentance and for faith. They come in the authority of Jesus of Nazareth. A command is being delivered and an offer is being made under the highest authorization.[28] That took care of everything. Because everything has the utmost simplicity and clarity, and because the matter cannot be postponed, it needs no further preparation, discussion, or advertising. A king is standing outside the door; he can come at any minute: do you want to bow down and receive him humbly, or do you want him to destroy and kill you in his wrath? Those who are willing to hear now have heard all there is to say. They will not want to delay the messenger, who must go on to the next city. But for those who do not want to hear, the grace period is over. They have pronounced their own judgment. “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts!” (Heb. 4:7). That is gospel preaching. Is it unmerciful haste? Nothing is more unmerciful than pretending to the people that they still have a lot of time to repent. Nothing is more merciful; nothing is better news than the message to hurry, because the kingdom is very near. The messenger cannot wait until it is repeated over and over to everyone, and repeated to everyone in his or her own language. God’s language is clear enough. The messenger does not control who will hear and who will not. God alone knows “who are worthy.” They will hear the word, just as it is spoken by the disciples. Woe to the city and the house which does not receive the messenger of Jesus! It will undergo a terrible judgment. Sodom and Gomorrah, the cities of licentiousness and decadence, may expect a more merciful judgment than the cities of Israel that reject the word of Jesus. Vices and sins can be forgiven by the word of Jesus, but those who reject the word of salvation itself cannot be saved. There is no worse sin than unbelief toward the gospel. Then there is nothing left for the messengers to do but leave that place. They go, because the word cannot remain there. In fear and astonishment they have to recognize the simultaneous power and weakness of the word of God. The disciples can only stay where the word of God stays,[31] because they cannot and should not force anything against the word or beyond the word. Their commission is not to wage a heroic struggle or fanatically enforce a great idea or a “good thing.” If the word of God is rejected, then they are rejected with it. But they should shake the dust from their feet as a sign of the curse which will come to that place but will not harm them. The peace they brought to that place, however, will revert to them. “This is a consolation to the servants of the church, who think they are not accomplishing anything. You should not get upset; what other people do not want will become an even greater blessing for you yourselves. Thus says the Lord to them: They have despised it, so keep it for yourselves” (Bengel).[1]
