“Or”…. Many Choices on the Path of Christian Discipleship –  Purity 645

Purity 645 02/03/2022  Purity 645 Podcast

Good morning,

Today’s photo of a Sach’s Covered Bridge in Gettysburg Pennsylvania  comes to us from a friend’s recent visit with family in the area. Ever since October 7, 2021, I have a warm place in my heart for covered bridges because on that day the covered bridge in Buskirk NY became a point of demarcation in my life as I crossed the bridge on the way to the work assignment not knowing that I would receive some information and some inspiration to make the seventh day in October the day I asked TammyLyn to be my wife.  When I recrossed the bridge in Buskirk, I had a definite plan and a purpose for that day, and for the rest of my life, that be came clear in an instant.

It’s Thursday and I share photos of pathways today as an encouragement to all to get on the path of Christian Discipleship by choosing to live by faith and by the power of the Holy Spirit.  That might sound a bit mystical, but it merely points to a life that is intentional about living according to God’s wisdom and ways and that is defined by our efforts to know God, to seek His presence, and to see the fruit of the Spirit manifest in our lives.

I lead a Freedom in Christ Men’s Discipleship Course meeting via Zoom tonight and I am looking forward to it because I have been blessed with the opportunity to encourage men to experience their freedom in Christ from all over the eastern parts of the United States and regardless of whether they are in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Massachusetts, or New York the advice for all of these men tonight will be the same: make the daily choice to follow the Lord into the life of freedom that He has for you.

The thing I love about walking with the Lord and about that simple advice to follow Him is the fact that although the advice may be the same for all these men, the way the Lord directs their individual paths of discipleship is always different.

We have a personal God that knows all about us and He has a very specific plan for each of our lives and He has a variety of purposes for us to walk into to experience our increasing freedom and maturity in Christ.

In counseling a friend the other evening, we discussed various decisions they could make in their life to overcome the problems they are facing.  I invited them to think outside of the box and brainstorm various alternatives for what they could choose to do to get out of the mess they are in and then assured them that no matter what course they chose the Lord would be with them.

I stated that the Lord was with them wherever they go and that He would never leave them or forsake them so I advised that it would probably be best to try to communicate with God to see if He would give them some wisdom and guidance in the things they should choose to do.

I kept saying the word “or” over and over again as we discussed the options they had to demonstrate that the Lord gives us freedom in the choices we make, and He will allow us to make them even if they aren’t the wisest options.

Sometimes the Lord allows us to learn from trial and error, but I wanted to encourage my friend that instead of thinking that the solution is just some blind stroke of luck by choosing some random course of action, the Lord has given us the Bible to discern what principles of life we should live by.

Any of the options before us that would go against the truth of God’s word are not the ways the Lord is directing us to go.  Instead of being overwhelmed by all the various choices in life, the word of God helps us to make wise decisions.

The authority of God’s word stands above the opinions of men and the ways of the world.  When we choose to walk in the Spirit, we summarily reject the worldly ways of doing things that led to the mess we are in and instead we choose to do things God’s way.

I pointed out that living this way could simplify our lives tremendously as God’s righteous path for living never leads to regret but at the same time assured my friend that the principles of God’s word still allow for spontaneity of actions and making bold choices that may be seen as thinking outside of the box of the world system but will be dynamic and creative and approved by God!

The faithful examples of men and women who answered the call of God on their lives in the Bible show us that God doesn’t always direct us in ways that we can expect but when we are true to His call the things He suggests always seem to work for the ultimate good of the situation even when we may initially face trials and turmoil when we choose to follow Him.

God gives us the choice to trust Him and to follow Him and when we step out in faith to do what He directs us to do we discover that we are blessed for our obedience. When we obey God, we learn. When we obey God, we grow.  When we walk in the Spirit long enough, we discover that there simply is no better way to live our lives than in the Lord’s presence and according to His principles and purposes.

So make the daily decision to trust the Lord by renewing your mind with His word and by making changes to how you live your life based on His wisdom.   When you do that you leave the darkness behind, problems get solved, and a life that is transformed by the victory and freedom that God brings emerges from what was a dysfunctional worldly existence.

So keep walking and talking with God.  He welcomes you to follow His lead and to experience the peace, love, and joy that naturally comes from walking in the  Spirit.

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The NLT Bible Promise Book for Men”.

This morning’s meditation verse is:

Matthew 5:4 (NLT2)
4  God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Today’s verse comes from  Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and encourages us that comfort will come to those who mourn.

Today’s verse acknowledges the harsh realities of loss in our lives.  The verse indicates that there will be things to mourn over in our lives, but the Lord tells us that if we allow ourselves to mourn we will be comforted.

There are two life applications for this verse.

The first deals with loss and the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits that come from mourning.  Unfortunately in some Christian circles, there is a tendency to discourage mourning for loss loved ones because we are to know theologically that whatever their eternal destiny is on the other side of life, God is good and what happens to them will be right.

If they had faith in Jesus they will be with Him in paradise, if they didn’t they will be rightfully separated from the One they rejected and receive the judgement they willfully chose for themselves by refusing to accept God’s gift of salvation.

Rarely, when someone dies is this second option considered as the consensus opinion is that everyone who dies is in “a better place”.   Be compassionate, wise, and discerning in how you share that truth in love and be sure to offer your friendship and presence to the grieving more than your ideas on their loved one’s final destination.   The game is over for the departed so let’s offer the peace of God to the living by letting them mourn in peace to be comforted.

Those who do not allow themselves to mourn may be subject to the enemy as their denial of loss and pain could be seen as an active deception. Conversely those who get stuck in a period of mourning can also run the risk of being oppressed by the enemy’s lies as the emphasis on the pain of loss can be used to cause the grieving to distrust the Lord’s goodness or to make their departed loved one an ‘idol” in their life.

The idea behind Jesus’ words, as the Son of God, is that we are to mourn by going to God to find comfort.  It is in the Lord’s presence that we can find healing and comfort for the heartache that results from loss. So we are not to draw into ourselves in mourning and reflect on what we think or feel that death means, but we are to be comforted by what God tells us about death and how He offers eternal life to those in relationship with Him through faith in Jesus.  There is comfort to be found when we seek the Lord’s truth.

And that brings us to the second application of this verse:  the personal mourning we face when we have a realization of our sin and separation from God.   When the Lord reveals to us that we are not living right and that we are on the road to perdition, we should be  greatly grieved in our spirits.   We may question how God could condemn us for our sins or may frantically grasp at some way for us to be approved in our own efforts.

God doesn’t mind this search for meaning in our lives as we weigh out how we are supposed to live our lives but in the final summation we are supposed to find the futility of any ideas that we can “save ourselves”.  In our realization of our failings, we are to mourn our self-righteousness as being inadequate to save us.  We are to mourn our own efforts and be comforted by surrendering to God by making Jesus our Lord and Savior.

When we mourn our sinful existence, we can find comfort, healing, and life in Christ alone.

And finally, beyond salvation, today’s verse also can point to repentance in our daily walk as those besetting sins and those periodic mistakes should cause us to mourn and to be comforted by surrendering to the Lord’s call to discipleship and actively crucifying the flesh and renewing the mind to experience our freedom in Christ.

So mourning is not a bad thing. The Lord tells us that those who mourn will be comforted. So whether it is dealing with the loss of things or loved ones, the morning of our separation from God, or our feelings of sadness over our habitual or periodic failings,  go to the Lord to mourn and express your feelings but accept His wisdom and ways to find comfort, healing and strength that will take you from the darkness of mourning to the joy that comes in the morning of the dawn of a victorious life of freedom In Christ.

UNDERSTANDING SEXUAL BONDAGES

The Apostle Paul identifies every child of God with Christ in His life, death, burial, and resurrection in Romans 6. That association is true, because our souls are in union with God, and His life is eternal. We are to continuously choose to believe that we are alive in Christ and dead to sin. There is a law of sin and a law of death and laws cannot be done away with. But they can be overcome by a greater law, which is the law of life in Christ Jesus.145

So sin is still present and tempting, and physical death is still imminent. But the law of life in Christ Jesus ensures us that we will continue to live spiritually and be forever in the presence of God. And the law of life in Christ Jesus is greater than the law of sin. As long as we live by faith according to what God says is true and in His power, we will not sin. Paul goes on to say that it is our responsibility not to let sin reign in our mortal body, and he tells us how. “Do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”146

If you commit a sexual sin, you use your body as an instrument of unrighteousness and you allow sin to reign in your mortal body. Confession alone will not resolve this. There is one other passage in the Bible that is important for overcoming sexual strongholds as follows:

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? May it never be! Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a harlot is one body with her? For He says, “The two will become one flesh.” But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:15-20).

SEXUAL BONDING

Bonding takes place when unholy sex is committed. The person has become one flesh with his or her partner. That is true even in the case of incest or rape. The body is used as an instrument of unrighteousness. The temple is violated. But that isn’t fair! Of course it’s not fair, and I can’t promise that it won’t happen to you or anyone else. But I can tell you how to resolve it in Christ so that you don’t have to stay in bondage to the sexual abuse. We have observed that if there is voluntary compliance with the sexual abuser, the victim usually will become very sexually active. In cases of rape and incest, a woman will usually shut down sexually, even if she is now married to a Christian husband. Sex is dirty in her mind, and she can’t stand to be touched.

We are warned to flee from any form of immorality, because it is a self-destructive sin that we commit against our own bodies. God and Satan both know our weakness to sexual passions. Satan plays on that weakness, but God provides a way of escape.

Worst Case Scenarios and the End of the World as You Know it– Purity 644

Worst Case Scenarios and the End of the World as You Know it–  Purity 644

Purity 644 02/02/2022   Purity 644 Podcast

Good morning,

Today’s photo of a bridge stretching over the Oahu countryside under blue skies  along the journey up the Haiku Stairs, aka the Stairway to Heaven, comes to us from friend’s trip to the Islands back in July of 2021. Their trip was truly epic as it was part vacation, part family obligation, and part vision quest as they enjoyed new sights, new accomplishments, and new insights into who they are.

Life is all about learning who we are and enjoying the things that God has provided for us to experience that includes people, places, and things.   You get out of life what you put into it and when you invest in your relationship with God the returns you receive are simply divine as a life of “walking in the Spirit” puts you in the context of a grand design where every moment has meaning and where you are never alone in your journey, no matter the ups and downs.

It's Wednesday and even though today’s photo seems to have us in a valley between two peaks, I feel that its implied upward direction was an adequate way of expressing the fact that we will ascend over the “hump” of midweek one way or another and the atmosphere I get from it of “a journey” makes me want to encourage you to be intentional and hopeful as you walk through today and into the future beyond.

As I shared yesterday, those in Christ are victorious.  We have “won” the unbelievable gift of God’s grace that revealed to us the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ which caused us to “make a decision” to make Jesus our Lord and Savior: a decision that made us spiritually alive and delivers a new and everlasting life for us to enjoy and experience in the here and now as well as in eternity forevermore.

Salvation messages tend to point to heaven and life beyond death but my purpose in life is to encourage everyone I know that the gift of our salvation is to be enjoyed now and the journey of being conformed to the image of Christ brings the freedom and abundant life that the scriptures speak of.

However, there are several obstacles that can hinder Christiasn from experiencing the freedom they have in Christ.  We have to contend with the world and the devil who would tell you that our “religion” doesn’t change anything, and I would agree that the empty practices of a “religion” won’t change much but a dynamic interactive relationship with God certainly will.

As bad as we have to resist the devil and reject the lies of the world, we also have to deal with what is probably our biggest barrier to experiencing the fruit of the Spirit: ourselves.

Our closed minds, our cold hearts, and our unwillingness to trust the Lord can keep us in abject misery.  This condition of miserable Christianity usually is defined with proclamations of “I try but…”, “I can’t do that”, “do you expect me to…” “I’m not going to do that…” “I’m only human…”  “I don’t have time for that…” “I need to sleep…” “I’m tired…” “I don’t have the strength”,  “I don’t have the faith…”  and several other statements that speak of our insufficiency and that proclaim a destiny of doom.

I recently counseled a friend who is seeking their freedom in Christ and who is experiencing a “day of reckoning” as they are surrounded by financial problems, relationship problems, sin problems, and work problems.  They are in a situation that is simply unbearable.  They are wallowing in a situation where there seems to be no answers in sight and whose consequences seem to be leading to a complete disaster.  They are under a mountain and everything they think to do seems hopeless.

In my early attempts to gauge the situation I tried to simplify matter as offer some simple solutions to try to turn things around.  For every bit of advice I gave there was an excuse for how that wouldn’t work or how they were unable to follow it.  To be honest, I felt a little hopeless and powerless because I wanted to give them advice to turn things around and I wasn’t getting anywhere.  It reminded me of a line from an R.E.M. song:

Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline

It's the end of the world as we know it….”

Men tend to want to fix things, I think we all do and when  all my advice seemed to be rejected instead of getting upset and to challenging my friend, I decided to agree with them.

“Yeah, it’s the end of the world as you know it.”  You have made a huge mess and it looks like there are no solutions. It looks like we are going to live out our worst case scenario.   So what does that mean? And what do we do then?

I then reminded my friend that they forgot something, they are not alone in their struggles and that with God they always have a source of hope, power, love, and strength that they can lean on.

A great deal of the consequences of the mess they are in are the result of poor choices. So in order to turn around they had to make a smart choice to follow the Lord and start living according to His wisdom and ways and to accept whatever might come knowing that the Lord will never leave them and will walk with them through whatever trials and tribulations that their “worst case scenario” may bring.

I reminded them that the “worst case scenario” would be their death, which would result with them being with the Lord and His kingdom forever.  So not so bad a result after all.

But let me be clear here, I was not encouraging suicide. I was encouraging my friend to live His life by faith that would accept even his death as being something not to fear.

When we face our biggest fear and realize that God has the answer for it we can face everything this world, the devil, or our poor choices may cause us to suffer.

I then pointed out that bankruptcy would probably suck as a consequence too, but I reminded my friend that even that “worst case scenario” didn’t have to destroy them and that even if they suffered that they would still live in the love of the Lord and they would have reason to have peace and joy.

When we are in Christ, there is simply no “worst case scenario” that we can not survive.  When we live in the Lord’s presence we can receive His love, strength, and wisdom to carry on to the next day and if we keep walking and talking with God we will one day find ourselves beyond “the valley of the shadow of death” and out from underneath the “weight of the world” that we have been carrying.

Oh but let’s keep this real.  I’m not talking about instant deliverance here! “Oh I need money, so I pray and get a check in the mail!”  While anything is possible with God, there is no learning or maturation in instant blessings and the Lord wants you to learn from the mistakes that you have made in life and wants you to lean on Him and follow Him out of your messes.  That means accepting responsibility for the mess you made. That’s means repenting which means to change our minds and our behaviors to align with God’s ways rather than our own.  That means going continually into God’s presence to be filled with the Holy Spirit to empower our walk and our convictions of who we are in Christ.  That’s means changing the way we think and the way we have lived.  That means being open to the solutions and alternatives that may be unthinkable.

When I made that suggestion, my friend started to think of some underhanded way of hiding finances to relieve his burden.

I reminded them that as Christian we don’t do that. We accept responsibility and take our lumps for the dumb decisions we have made. We work toward solutions with honesty and integrity, and we prepare ourselves for a long journey to freedom and deliverance.

When we decide to follow the Lord, we align ourselves with the eternal One and our commitment should be forever.  That means going His way and trusting that He will lead us out of the desert and that we will remain faithful to follow Him no matter how long it takes.

Seems impossible, where’s the quick fix?

Our relationship with God is the quick fix as He gives us eternal life, forgiveness of sins, and the power to overcome the moment we say yes to Jesus but in order to experience it all we must humbly submit to the Lord  and resist the devil, the world, and our old ways.

God will see us through even our “worst case scenario”  but we won’t have any peace if we refuse to trust Him and follow Him in the way we should go.   So trust the Lord to see you through today.  His mercies are new every morning, so enjoy them and then trust the Lord to see you through to the next day.  The journey out of the darkness is a collection of steps that bring you closer to the light a little bit each day.  So keep going with God and one day you discover that your situations will change and that you have the ability to find peace and joy even in “your worst case scenario.”

It may be the “end of the world as you know it” but God has a new life and a new world for you to live in. So open your heart, open you mind, and follow the Lord to know it.

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The NLT Bible Promise Book for Men”.

This morning’s meditation verse is:

Psalm 147:3 (NLT2)
3  He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.

Today’s verse speaks of the Lord’s healing of the broken hearted and who He will bandage up our wounds.

Our God is not just the God of the good times and season of prosperity. One of the greatest promises of God is that He will never leave us or forsake us, and it is most evident in the dark seasons of our lives where we are broken hearted.

When we suffer loss and heartache we are often woken up from the world of illusion to see the harsh realities of death and of how people can be selfish and uncaring.  We can feel utterly alone and enter into a state where everything seems unreal because our innocence is lost and the way we thought of the world as a “nice place” is shattered.

But the Lord never wanted us to find peace and meaning from this broken world of sin and death, the peace that goes beyond all understanding comes from Him and Him alone.

I encourage people to pray to the Lord every day as a spiritual practice because I know of the great comfort that comes from being in His presence and the benefits of receiving His love, strength and wisdom.   But you have to go to Him to experience it.  And when you are broken hearted or hurting or wounded, the Lord is waiting with open arms to take comfort you and take your pain away.

Healing might not come in an instant, but the Lord will patiently abide with you and restore you when you lean on Him.  The old adage that “everything is going to be okay” is only true when you are in relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ.

So press into your relationship with the One who caused the blind to see, and the lame to walk. If he can do those things, you can trust Him to heal you’re your broken heart too.

THE EFFECTS OF ADDICTION

People caught in addictive and immoral patterns of behavior are subjected to some of the cruelest harassment of the enemy. First, Satan tempts them to sin, then he mercilessly condemns them for sinning, and then he attacks their sense of worth. If they believe the lies, they will start thinking that they are nothing more than a hopeless sinner, alcoholic, or addict.

You do not have a chemical problem, or sex problem, or drug problem, you have a life problem. You will not be successful just trying to eliminate bad behavior; telling you that what you are doing is wrong does not give you the power to stop doing it. You need to get right with God, and then the life of Christ will be manifested in you, and you will have the power of God to overcome the sin. If you are filled (controlled) by the Holy Spirit, you will not carry out the desires of the flesh.143 You don’t need condemnation! You want to be free from sin, because nobody likes to live in bondage to sin.

GOING THROUGH STEP SIX

Overcoming habitual sin may require help from a trusted brother or sister in Christ. James 5:16 says, “Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” Sometimes the assurance of 1 John 1:9 is enough: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Confession is not saying, I’m sorry. It is openly admitting, I did it. Whether you need help from other people or just the accountability of walking in the light before God, pray the following prayer aloud:

Dear Heavenly Father, You have told me to put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lust. I confess that I have given in to fleshly lusts that wage war against my soul. I thank You that in Christ my sins are already forgiven, but I have broken Your holy law and I have allowed sin to wage war in my body. I come to You now to confess and renounce these sins of the flesh so that I might be cleansed and set free from the bondage of sin.

Please reveal to my mind all the sins of the flesh I have committed and the ways I have grieved the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ holy name, I pray. Amen.144

The following list contains many sins of the flesh, but a prayerful examination of Mark 7:20-23, Galatians 5:19-21, Ephesians 4:25-31, and other Scripture passages will help you to be even more thorough. Look over the list below and the Scriptures just listed and ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind the ones you need to confess. He may reveal others to you as well. For each one the Lord shows you, pray a prayer of confession from your heart. There is a sample prayer following the list. (Note: Sexual sins, eating disorders, substance abuse, abortion, suicidal tendencies, and perfectionism will be dealt with later in this step.)  Note: If you are struggling with habitual sin, read Overcoming Addictive Behavior (Bethany House, 2003).

For each item that you checked above, confess to the Lord as follows:

·       Quarreling/Fighting

·       Complaining/Criticism

·       Lustful Actions

·       Swearing

·       Lying

·       Anger

·       Drunkenness

·       Procrastination

·       Stealing

·       Jealousy/Envy

·       Sarcasm

·       Gossip/Slander

·       Apathy/Laziness

·       Hatred

·       Lustful Thoughts

·       Cheating

·       Greed/Materialism

·       Others

Lord Jesus, I confess that I have sinned against You by (name the sins). Thank You for Your forgiveness and cleansing. I now turn away from these expressions of sin and turn to You, Lord. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I will not carry out the desires of the flesh. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Celebrating and Claiming Continuous Victory in Christ– Purity 643

Celebrating and Claiming Continuous Victory in Christ–  Purity 643

Purity 643 02/01/2022 Purity 643 POdcast

Good morning,

Today’s photo of the last sunset of January of 2022 over the mostly frozen Hudson River near Castleton NY comes to us from yours truly as I seized the moment yesterday and decided to capture a picture of that blazing sun that I knew would be just below the horizon when I got back to my home in fifteen minutes or so.  And I was right, the sun sets quick in January in my neck of the woods and when you have extended periods of overcast skies you have to be intentional in enjoying the sun when it is out on display.     When the temperatures in the morning are either below or just above zero, you can either lament over the cold or rejoice when the sun does come out and raises the temperatures to the relatively balmy mid-twenties or the sweltering heat of those above that magic number of 32 degrees when the ice and snow melts and recedes a little bit.

I’m not fooling myself of course today is February 1st and I know that our winter seasons are often defined by what happens in the next 28 days, but I have lived long enough to know that everyday we go through in the next two months is another day closer to the return of spring and although I can appreciate winter for what it is, I consider every passing day in the days ahead as a victory of sorts.

Through the many years of my life, I have walked through many trials and tribulations and thankfully I have had a close relationship with the Lord to help me walk through most of the hardest ones in the past 11, going on 12 years.   Our walk with the Lord is progressive walk through time and space and will ultimately culminate in our being in His presence and His kingdom as He will eventually reclaim all of existence for His purposes and glory.

So just like our slow walk through the season of winter, every day behind us is another day closer to the return of the Lord and thus our progressing lives should not be viewed with fear or trepidation as we contemplate seeing the end times unfold before us or as we see ourselves age.  Instead we should have immense hope and joy over the fact that we are moving closer to the days where we will see our Lord face to face.  We should view every day as a mini-victory because we are moving closer to Him and because we are being faithful to follow Him through all the “mini-dramas” of our lives.

I know that focusing on the return of the Lord and the coming of His kingdom may be a tall order for our imaginations and may seem to be as cold a comfort as the winter’s crisp temperatures outside, but our Christian walk also focuses on the here and now and the hope we have for today can be increased by our reflection on the Lord’s interactions in our lives and from the testimonies of others.

The word of God is filled with statements that tell us that because of our faith in Christ we already have “the victory” that we seek.

1 Corinthians 15:57 (NKJV)
57  But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

In Christ we are victorious, over sin and death. So yes, we can celebrate our “future homecoming” in heaven!  In,

John 14:2-3 (NKJV), Christ told his disciples
2  In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

Christ was talking about the life after death in heaven. Hey, the assurance that we need not fear death is something that should liberate you from fear!  So meditate on that!  Or the other option is that we will be living on the earth when Christ comes to take us home while we still live!

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 (NKJV) says:
16  For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
17  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
18  Therefore comfort one another with these words.

I’m just trying to be obedient and comfort you with these words.   Talk about good news!

But beyond these awesome pictures, of heaven or the rapture of the saints,  we can enjoy the progressive victory of being faithful to the call of Christ on our lives by living everyday in His presence and enjoying the peace that comes from walking in the Spirit.

Our daily lives as Christian disciples are lives that are filled with the worship of the Lord and the contemplation of  who we are in Christ and the abundant joy that comes from progressive growth and maturity that we experience the more that we walk with the Lord.

So keep walking and talking with God and experience your life as a victorious celebration of your Christian faith, that recognizes the things you have gone through, the things you are doing now, and looks forward to what the Lord will be doing next on this journey called life where the God who created the universe has personally called your name and asked you to be with Him for all eternity and who wants you to see the  fruit of the Spirit manifest in your life when you draw close to Him and follow where He leads.

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The NLT Bible Promise Book for Men”.

This morning’s meditation verse is:

Psalm 116:15 (NLT2)
15  The LORD cares deeply when his loved ones die.

Today’s verse speaks of the Lord’s great care for our lives and of our passing.

The Lord loves all of His creation. So in a way all those living are His loved ones.  However, His redemptive plan, the reason Jesus lived and died for the atonement of our sins, offers mankind the choice to accept or reject His love.

The Lord loves us so much that He wants us to be free to choose to love Him in return.  The word tells us that God doesn’t anyone to perish and that He wishes that all would come to have faith in Jesus, but He doesn’t force us to.

So He deeply cares about when His loved ones die because some of those loved ones will choose to reject Him and face His wrath rather than accept His love.

But this verse also can refer to those who accept His love and are given eternal life because of their faith in Jesus.

You might think that God wouldn’t care about the deaths of those who will be in His eternal kingdom and who will be victorious over death, but He does care.

The shortest verse in the Bible:

John 11:35 (NKJV)
35  Jesus wept.

Refers to Jesus’ response to the death of Lazarus.  Even though Jesus knew that He would raise Lazarus from the dead He still cried.   Why? Because death, for the believer or the unbeliever is wrong.  Death is the result of sin as scripture tells us the wages of sin is death. God warned Adam of the consequences of sin, but he ignored it and every descendant of Adam therefore sins and dies.

However, God made a way for us to live, and Revelation tells us that in the coming kingdom of the Lord that there will be no more death.

Revelation 21:4 (NKJV)
4  And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

God doesn’t want any of us to die. He cares deeply when His loved ones die, and He has made a way through Jesus Christ where we can overcome death and He will one day close the books on death and sin as He establishes the new heaven and new earth where He will reign forever.

So it’s okay to grieve the dead, God cares when His loved ones die so we should care too, and we should be very vocal when our friends and family suffer a loss to speak the truth in love and to let them know that God calls us to life through faith in Jesus Christ and that some day death will be not more for those who answer His call.

CHAPTER SEVEN -  OVERCOMING HABITUAL SIN

Suppose you could see the reality of the spiritual world as God does and knew what people were thinking. You observed a dark brooding angelic figure lurking outside the door of a young Christian named Danny.

Disguised as an angel of light, this demon subtly suggests that Danny open the door to sin: Why don’t you take a peek at that pornography? You know you want to. You will get away with it. Who would know? Everybody else does it.

The Holy Spirit within Danny brings immediate conviction and offers a way of escape. Danny also has a physical appetite for food and sex, as well as old flesh patterns that operate independently of God. The old nature wants to be satisfied and argues against the Spirit of God: What’s wrong with looking at pornography anyway? After all, who created me to have all these desires? Wasn’t it God? How could He create me a certain way and then condemn me for it?

The battle in the mind is intense, “For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another.”136 God offered Danny a way of escape, but he failed to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.137 At first the pictures are a delight to the eyes, and the body responds with a euphoric explosion of feelings. But the pleasure is only for a moment, because “each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”138

CONSEQUENCES TO WRONG CHOICES

The brooding figure takes advantage of the open door, because Danny acted independently of God by choosing to sin. Satan’s role as the tempter changes immediately to the role of the accuser: “You will never get away with this. How can you call yourself a Christian and do what you do? You’re pathetic!”

Overcome by guilt, Danny cries out to God, “Lord, forgive me; I’ll never do it again.” Two days later, Danny sins again, which precipitates another cry for forgiveness. As the downward spiral of sin, confess, sin, confess, and sin again continues, another event takes place. Danny is caught in his sin by another “Christian,” who knows nothing of compassion.

Instead of responding as a minister of grace and reconciliation, he joins with the brooding figure in a “ministry” of condemnation.

“You’re a pathetic example of what a real Christian is supposed to be!” he says to Danny. “How can you do that and call yourself a Christian? You’re an embarrassment to the Church. You better confess it and beg God’s forgiveness.” Legalistic controlling “Christians” are in league with the accuser of the brethren, and they don’t even know it.

This “Christian” accuser doesn’t seem to know that Danny is already forgiven by God and that he has probably confessed his sin a hundred times before. His merciless and insensitive response will only drive Danny to greater depths of despair. Adding guilt and shame does not enhance mental health. The world, the flesh, and the devil have brought another saint to his knees. How does one break this cycle of defeat? Is confession enough?

To confess means to agree with God or to walk in the light as He is in the light.139 It is the critical first step in repentance, but it is not complete repentance and won’t be until there is a demonstrated change. We must agree with God and face the truth, but that alone will not deal with sin’s entrapment. You have submitted to God, if the confession was genuine and accompanied by a commitment to do His will, but you haven’t yet resisted the devil.140

Complete repentance means to submit to God, resist the devil, and close the door to future temptations. That means getting rid of the pornography in your home, and on your computer. It means staying away from bars, drug dealers, and inappropriate relationships. It means that you “abstain from every form of evil.”141 It may mean that you change your phone number, so drug dealers and other undesirables can’t contact you. The door will be completely closed when all the bondages have been broken and all the mental strongholds have been torn down. The latter includes renouncing the lies you have believed that contributed to the sinful behavior, and then choosing the truth. This Step is intended to break the bondages and tear down the mental strongholds. You will be transformed when you renew your mind to the truth of God’s Word.142
